Are you ready for your first Jiu Jitsu class? Are you nervous? The thought of your first Jiu Jitsu class might be intimidating. At Zenyo Jiu Jitsu, we want you to feel that Jiu Jitsu can be for you. We focus on creating an environment where everyone can do their best. So, here are six things you can expect to feel or experience at your first Baltimore Jiu Jitsu class at Zenyo.

I clearly remember one of my very first martial arts classes from more than 20 years ago. We did lots of calisthenics. Then I was shown one basic technique.

I was put to spar almost immediately with an experienced student. I told him I didn’t know anything. I asked him to go easy on me.

The next thing I know, I’m getting punched in the face over and over again. My partner smiled at me the whole time. He would show me how to punch, and then immediately counter me. Pow.

Now that I run my own school, I would never allow that to happen.

Our goal at Zenyo Jiu Jitsu is to guide you in a way that creates a great welcome to martial arts. No one will punch you in the face.

You should expect to feel like you are meeting new friends. We are happy to have you with us to learn Jiu Jitsu. We will introduce you to the group and make you feel like you belong.

“The most basic human desire is to feel like  you belong. Fitting in is important.”

You should expect to feel safe. You will not be asked to do anything that makes you uncomfortable. You will not be asked to spar. You will not be rushed into sparring. Safety is our most important goal.

The training at Zenyo Jiu Jitsu is based upon the Japanese principle of Jita Kyoei. Jita Kyoei means mutual welfare and benefit.

Mutual welfare and benefit means that everyone should be safe in training and benefit from practice.

“The principle … from the very beginning … is not one of aggression but one of flowing with things.”

Learning is fun. Jiu Jitsu is fun. Learning Jiu Jitsu is really fun.

A positive learning environment that is fun creates committed students who will progress in Jiu Jitsu long term. Many of the drills at Zenyo are based on a model of play as learning.

“The truth is that play seems to be one of the most advanced methods that nature has created to allow a complex brain to create itself.”

Individual Challenge

You will be challenged in Jiu Jitsu. You will not be challenged beyond your abilities.

We all start at different levels. We all progress at different rates. At Zenyo, we understand these differences and work to make accommodations so that all students can participate in class. You do not need to be strong or fit to begin class.

That will happen as you come to practice.

“Build step by step. Push yourself, but not too hard. Learn. Keep it fun.”

Personal Instruction

The way of Zenyo is personal instruction. You will be guided in training by the instructor or an experienced student. At Zenyo, no one gets lost in the group. You will not be overlooked or left on your own. Each and every student is important.

“What we learn with pleasure, we never forget.”

Are You Ready?

Zenyo Jiu Jitsu Baltimore is committed to creating a great environment for all students. For your first class you can expect to feel welcome and safe, to have fun while being challenged. We will guide you on the way. When you are ready, we are here. We hope you will join us on this amazing journey of learning how to be strong but gentle through Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

“It is not important to be better than someone else, but to be better than yesterday.”
